FALLEN FIRST RESPONDERS

In 1985, the Broward Sheriff ’s Advisory Council was formed by caring community leaders who realized that additional funds were desperately needed to support families of first responders killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

Over the years this membership organization has evolved to also provide essential equipment, training and wellness programs for these dedicated public servants and otherwise invest in the people we depend on to keep our community a safe and desirable place to live.

As a non-profit 501(c)(3) Corporation, Broward Sheriff ’s Advisory Council relies solely on donations from our members and the generosity of the community and is deeply committed to helping first responders and their families as well as the Broward County community in general.

OUR MISSION:

TO MAKE ALL BROWARD COUNTY FIRST RESPONDERS OUR FIRST PRIORITY BY PROVIDING VITAL RESOURCES THROUGH COMMUNITY AND CORPORATE COLLABORATION.

CRISIS SUPPORT

Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council is proud to have provided $250,000+ to the families of Broward County First Responders killed or critically injured in the line of duty.

On December 31, 2017 Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Ryan died in the line of duty while he was serving at the Broward County jail. Deputy Ryan remembered as a “Gentle Giant” who loved his job, family, and colleagues served with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for just under 14 years and worked in the Department of Detention. He is survived by his wife, three stepsons, and four brothers.

Three weeks shy of the birth of his first child, Miccosukee Police Sergeant Steven Greco’s life was cut short. The 40-year-old was killed when a wrong-way driver crashed into his vehicle head-on. His daughter, Gianna, was born March 8, 2019. In response to support provided by Broward Sheriff ’s Advisory Council’s Crisis Support program, his widow, Phoebe, wrote:

“To our family in blue and support staff we are eternally grateful for your love, support and words of condolences at this heart shattering time of our lives.”

Broward Sheriff ’s Advisory Council also provided much-needed financial support to the family of Correctional Officer Tawanna Marin, who was struck and killed by a car. At the time of the accident, she was supervising an inmate work crew near the intersection of Sample Road and Lyons Road in Coconut Creek.

When serious health issues prevented Broward Sheriff ’s Deputy Cesar Morales, a 20-year veteran of the force, from working, Broward Sheriff ’s Advisory Council provided critical support to help the family cover mounting medical expenses.

In July 2019, Broward Sheriff ’s Deputy Benjamin “Benji” Nimtz, 30, died after his patrol SUV was struck by a speeding motorist. The husband and father of two young children had planned to join his family in Indiana. The former U.S. Army solider, who served in Afghanistan, was just a few shifts shy of the move. Broward Sheriff ’s Advisory Council provided financial comfort to this young family during this difficult time.

Just a few weeks after Deputy Nimtz’s death, Sgt. John Baker, Pembroke Pines Police Department, was severely injured when a vehicle crashed into his motorcycle. Broward Sheriff ’s Advisory Council financial support has helped his family cover medical expenses.

On Tuesday, February 2, 2021 FBI Special Agents Laura Schwartzenberger and Daniel Alfin were shot and killed as they were executing a search warrant in a case that involved violent crimes against children. The two FBI agents were dedicated to preventing crimes against children.

Special Agent Schwartzenberger, 43, had been with the F.B.I. since 2005. She leaves behind a husband and two young sons. Special Agent Alfin, 36, had been a special agent since 2009. He leaves behind a wife and one son.

This is one of the deadliest shootings in the bureau’s history. No agent had been shot and killed on duty since 2008.

The Broward Sheriff’s Advisory Council has provided financial support to both families during this difficult time.

“Every day, F.B.I. special agents put themselves in harm’s way to keep the American people safe, Special Agent Alfin and Special Agent Schwartzenberger exemplified heroism today in defense of their country. The F.B.I. will always honor their ultimate sacrifice and will be forever grateful for their bravery.”
-Christopher A. Wray, F.B.I. Director

Miccosukee Sergeant Horacio Sebastián Dominguez was killed in the line of duty in a vehicle crash on Sunday, February 21, 2021. Sergeant Dominguez was a U.S. Marine Corps and Army National Guard veteran who served Florida and the nation with honor and distinction. Governor Ron DeSantis ordered flags at the Florida State Capitol building to be flown at half-staff to honor his passing. He was 43 years old and served with the Miccosukee Police for three years. He leaves behind a wife and young daughter.
